Uses
- Holistic beauty and wellness applications, hair growth elixirs, antioxidant skin rinses, custom herbal shampoo infusions, and restorative scalp therapies.
Hair and scalp benefits
- Follicle fortification and growth: Infuses plant-derived iron and essential nutrients directly into the hair roots, working to strengthen the hair shaft, boost local circulation, and accelerate healthy growth.
- Premature greying defence: The dense concentration of vitamin C and active antioxidants aids in supporting natural melanin pathways, assisting in slowing down and delaying the onset of premature greying. Note that amla does not reverse existing grey hair.
- Scalp microbiome balance: Contains natural antimicrobial properties that directly target the root causes of dandruff, helping to sooth irritated, itchy scalps and restoring oil balance.
- Natural shampoo synergist: Pairs seamlessly with other traditional Ayurvedic botanicals like shikakai and soapnuts to form a gentle, saponin-rich cleansing wash that cleanses without stripping natural oils.
Skin and complexion benefits
- Collagen support and anti-ageing: The naturally high vitamin C content acts as a crucial co-factor for collagen synthesis, helping to improve skin elasticity, smooth texture, and soften fine lines.
- Hyperpigmentation and tone care: Helps to fade the appearance of stubborn dark spots, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation, revealing a visibly brighter and more even skin tone.
Health and wellness notes
- Internal vitality: Whole dried amla fruits are edible and can be ingested for supporting immunity and digestive wellness. We recommend that you rinse and hydrate the dried fruits.
Product Precautions
- Dietary consultation: If you wish to ingest our dried amla fruit for internal health benefits, please consult a professional dietician or healthcare practitioner beforehand.
- Staining awareness: Due to the rich concentration of natural tannins, concentrated amla rinses or oils may slightly darken very light or platinum-blonde hair.
For the best results, use these whole fruits to craft your own high-potency, fresh botanical extractions at home. Use regularly for best results.
Important preparation and mixing guidelines
- Preserving purity: Always prepare and store your amla infusions in clean, sterilized glass or ceramic containers. Avoid using reactive metal bowls or utensils to preserve the integrity of the natural vitamin C.
- Maximising potency: Gently crushing or breaking the dried fruits before steeping or infusing allows the internal active compounds to release more efficiently into your liquids.
- Clean and dry: we recommend rinsing the whole dried plant matter to remove all dust and drying it thoroughly. This can be done by rinsing in a sieve, spreading the damp plant matter on a baking sheet and heating it in a very low oven until completely dry.
The Ayurvedic infused hair & skin oil ritual
- The ingredients: Gather your whole dried amla fruits and a clean, bone-dry glass jar. Choose a high-quality, cold-pressed plant oil suited to your type (such as grape seed, sweet almond, jojoba, argan, olive, black cumin, or coconut oil).
- The botanical boost: For a hair-growth synergy, you can add dried brahmi leaves and bhringraj leaves into the jar alongside the amla.
- Method 1 (The warm double-boiler method): Place your dried plant material into the glass jar and submerge them fully in your chosen oil. Ensure your hands, jar, and utensils are completely dry to prevent water contamination. Place the open jar into a pot of water (a double boiler) and bring the water to a gentle boil. The water must boil, NOT the oil. Let the oil warm thoroughly for several hours; heating the herbs gently for longer yields a much deeper, stronger infusion. Allow it to cool completely, then strain through a fine mesh or cheesecloth into a clean glass jar.
- Method 2 (The solar fusion method): If you prefer a cold extraction, fill your jar with the herbs and oil, seal tightly, and place it on a warm, sunny windowsill. Leave it to infuse naturally for 4 to 6 weeks, shaking daily, before straining.
- Shelf-life hack: Stirring a few drops of pure Vitamin E oil into your strained, finished infusion acts as a natural antioxidant to prolong the shelf life of your custom oil. Apply regularly to your scalp, hair roots, or body skin. Using jojoba oil as your base also assists with shelf life as jojoba oil is actually a type of plant wax and doesn’t oxidise.
The antioxidant facial & scalp spritz and rinse
- The recipe: Place a few whole dried amla fruits into a cup or heat-safe flask. Pour fresh, boiling water over the fruit and allow it to steep undisturbed until the liquid cools down completely.
- The application: Strain the cooled, nutrient-rich tea into a clean spray bottle. Mist generously onto your clean face as a brightening toner or spray directly onto your scalp and hair as a leave-in growth-stimulating rinse. You can also put the amla ‘tea’ into a jug and use it as hair rinse.
- Storage: Keep your fresh spritz stored safely inside the fridge and use it within 2 weeks.
